Obsidian Beads
Obsidian is essentially volcanic glass that is produced when a particular type of lava cools rapidly, minimizing the formation of crystals. Obsidian is a type of glass, not a mineral.
It is easily broken and has been used in a variety of ways over the years in jewelry, weapons (as blades and spear tips), and cutting tools. At one time in the historical past, it was even used to make surgical scalpels. In some obsidian small, clustered crystals of cristobalite create a snowflake pattern. These samples are commonly called snowflake obsidian.
