Howlite Beads
Howlite is named after Henry How, the 19th century geologist who discovered it. It is classified as a borate mineral (calcium borosilicate hydroxide). It is a light material (which explains the "lite" in the name) and has a pourous texture. This property allows howlite to be dyed into almost any color. Howlite is often color treated to create faux turquoise. Howlite beads are very popular because of their light weight, the wide range of colors in which they are made, and their low cost.
