Where in the World is Bali?

bali-locationBali is a part of Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago. It is northwest of Australia, between the large island of Java and the small island of Lombok. One nice thing about Bali is that it provides relatively ease access to so many interesting places in Southeast Asia.

From Bali, some of the world's most interesting places are just a skip and a hop away, including Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Philippines. Flight times to Hong Kong, India and Australia are reasonable.  We usually fly from the U.S. to Japan, staying for a few days, and then fly down to Bali.

Indonesia consists of  five major islands and 30 smaller island groups.  The total number of islands is currently estimated to be 17,508, of which only 6000 are inhabited.  Indonesia derives its names from the Greek roots "Indos" (Indian) and "Nesos" (Island).  More than eighty percent of Indonesia's territory is ocean.

Indonesia lies between the Pacific Ocean (to the east) and the Indian Ocean (to the west). It provides the "stepping stones" that connect Australia to the Asian continent to the north.

The largest islands of Indonesia are Kalimantan, Sumatra, Irian Jaya, Sulawesi, and Java.  Bali is one of the smaller islands in terms of land mass, but certainly not in terms of cultural significance.
