What Makes a Bali Bead "Bali"?

bead3The experienced jewelry designer can identify a bead as "Bali made" with little difficulty. The Bali style of silverwork is characterized by the creation of elaborate, exquisite patterns on beads and findings through the careful placement and soldering of small granulations (silver balls) of various sizes and formed wire on a base. The final product is then usually oxidized (antiqued) to highlight the details.

This process is evident in the bead to the right, which was designed by our nephew.  Note the use of both wire work and granulations on this bead. It is an absolute piece of art!  The granulations and wiring visually "pop" because the base has been antiqued to create a contrast in brightness and color. It takes years of experience to produce beads with such perfect symmetry.  Note also that since each granulation (dot) is a separate ball of silver that has been attached to the base with soldering, the piece exhibits a high level of articulation that can never be achieved with casting.

This is not easy work. Most Westerners would not have the patience it requires to create even a single Bali bead.  To the Balinese, such effort comes naturally. To be Balinese is to be an artist.  Art permeates every aspect of this paradise island's culture, including its archetecture, ceremonies, and dress. Even its cuisine has an artful appearance to it.
